Movies

Here's a brief compilation of all the movies that have resonated with me

Do you notice a pattern between them?

Ginger Snaps (2000)
The metaphor for puberty in this movie it's actually pretty smart. I really had a great time watching all the chaos unfould and how the dinamic between Ginger and Brigitte changed from start to end. At some point I found it kind of relatable, because it's really underestimated how things tend to get rough once you hit puberty, suddenly you wake and you're this hairy, irritable and unstoppable mess and there's no way back. One of my favourite movies to watch in October.

Donnie Darko (2001)
When I first watched Donnie Darko I was like 12 and it was such a revelation for me. To this day I can't really put my finger on what caused such an impression on me since time travel it's not a topic that I'm really interested. I guess it's the melancholy that brings me the sacrifice that Donnie realised he had to do, y'know, the 'the world is better without me' stuff. Also, the 'world is ending' concept kept me really intrigued during the whole movie and all the symbolism added to it. God, Donnie Darko was such an event in my life.

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
The humor in this one was unmatched. It scratched a very specific spot in my brain that made me feel the same way when I was three and watched a Spongebob episode in the afternoon that I didn't want it to end. Sometimes, when life gets complicated I want to like, live in this movie, it just that it's very lighthearted and simple. A timeless classic.

Gummo (1997)
Pretty fucked up choice, I know. It was uncomfortable to watch and at points I felt like I could smell the movie, but it was totally worth it. The end really touched me in a way I didn't expect and the collage type of narrative (if there's one) caught me. This one has a special place in my heart, I can't help it.

Heathers (1988)
The criticism about performative kindness when a teenager commits suicide it's so brilliant to the point I don't think it exist another teenage movie that has done that in the same way. Also I really loved the color symbolism and the sarcasm and all the shit that happens. Love the way people's reaction to suicide is portrayed, it's so real it hurts: suddenly people makes the tragedy about them and the dead person becomes some sort of saint, and suicide takes a perfomative tendency, like it's the only way these young souls can be heard, and still, nobody hears them really. Such a great movie.

The Crow (1994)
I cried watching The Crow. The love story between Shelly and Eric it's a fairytale, a twisted one that ends in such a high note. The way this movie presents the idea of justice it's interesting and touching. The industrial scenography was iconic and Brandon Lee's performance was unforgettable, also i loved the soundtrack. I can't put into words how important this movie is to me.

The Lost Boys (1987)
The whole intro with Echo & The bunnymen's cover of People are Strange showing the weirdos that lurk Santa Carla it's so well done. The Lost Boys bring me a sense of individuality that no longer exist in our times, it's like everyone used to mind their own bussines and wear what they wanted however they wanted. This movie also contains my favourite portrait of vampires ever, love this concept that being a vampire has many perks (you never get old, you only sleep at daytime and party hard all night), but soon this perks become disadvantages since you get left behind in time meanwhile everyone around you grows up. I don't know, I had a great time watching this one.

Elephant (2003)
Not really sure why I like Elephant this much, since it can get pretty boring but to be fair, I think its portrait of the development of this type of tragedies it's very accurate. I remember being kind of scared or unsettled while watching the uneasy atmosphere reached its climax. All of it felt so natural.

Natural Born Killers (1994)
I have a love-hate relationship with this movie. At first, it was difficult to watch but it was worth it. The critism about all the media circus surrounding every high profile crimes it's unfortunately accurate to this day (also, love movies that take place in deserts). My favourite scene was the jailbreak, it was so irreverent and violent. This movie is one of a kind, like it or not.

Arizona Dream (1993)
This movie feels like some kind of fever dream. It's unexpectedly sad and weird. It feels personal to me, I don't know, it was a very surreal experience and I think it's the perfect movie to watch when you feel alone. Also, did I mention that it takes place in a desert?

Submarine (2010)
Oliver was such a sweet character, the whole movie was a wholesome experience. When I first watched itit gave this feeling that everything was gonna be alright, that there was hope for the better. It's cozy to watch, I'm surprised that Submarine isn't a cult movie yet, it's so entertaining and beautiful. I've lost the count of how many times I've seen it.

Fear and loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Trippy, fucked up, takes place in a desert, funny, nothing can go wrong. Johnny Depp's perfomance was brilliant and also, I loved the soundtrack.
